A very decorative Dutch plate with an old Dutch proverb inscribed on the front: "Wat baten kaars en bril, als de uil niet zien en wil", circa early 1900s.   The literal translation to English is: "what benefits do candle and glasses have if the owl does not want to see".  It is the English equivalent of "You take take a horse to water, but you can't make them drink".  In blues and greens with cartoon-like decoration of  an owl, a candle and some glasses.  A lovely plate, no makers marks.  In excellent condition with no signs of damage or restoration.
